Soul-Searching

a Poem by soma

With the closing of the eye, my world was sundered,
a great and magnificent divide across the chasms of my mind,
severing the sinews of my soul from my skin -
and there it floated off, and up, and out of this place,
somewhere beyond and away.
It traveled with great reluctance through the black sky,
a great emptiness it felt in the hole of space.
How tiny yet the stars seemed still, and how small the world,
billowing now high above the moonlit seas.
My soul, for a moment, closed its own eyes, and all was as the night:
dark and close, cold and quiet -
then slowly, from a distance, the hum of life,
and the settling of a calm warmth.
When again my soul opened its eyes,
I felt, curled faraway in a bed on the earth below,
a swell in my heart as I saw, in my sleep,
your soul next to mine.
